  • Tibet Girl, near Manigango, Kham,Tibet, 2005<br /> I photograph endangered cultures all over the world and have traveled to Tibet nearly every year for the last twenty years. On this particular trip I was driving in the remote eastern region of the Tibetan Plateau when I saw this young girl, part of a crowd returning from a local horse festival. It was pouring rain, so I brought her to a nearby school to take her photograph She was so small that the light from the window barely reached her; I had to stand her on a desk. Even at her young age, she had a face that seemed to express the underlying sadness of a culture that has been so challenged. Yet she had a look of resilience and tenacity well beyond her years. Hers may be the last generation of ethnic Tibetans to survive.

  • Komomo, Apprentice Maiko and Yachiho-san, Geisha in Kyoto, Japan<br /> <br /> Geisha are a part of a highly respected traditional profession in cultural Japan that dates back to the 17th century. Modern geisha today are a class of highly trained artistic female dance and music performers, hired to entertain and serve their guests at teahouses and restaurants. In the early 1900’s this was a thriving business of about 80,000 women. Today there are less than 2000 left in the industry.<br /> Komomo, (left), has long dreamed of becoming a geisha. “I come from a regular working family. I was enchanted with beautiful geisha from the first time I saw them in Kyoto when I was a young girl. They seemed to be the definition of style and sophistication. Our family was transferred to China for my father’s job but I wanted to always wear a kimono, to proudly represent my country and culture. When I found a teacher in Kyoto she told me training is so tough that only one of three girls make it. I told her I would be one of the three. I was fifteen years old when I left my parents to return to Japan and live in this okiya house with the other girls. As part of my training I’m committed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for about five years, studying the formal arts such as dance, music, poetry. I love what I do. My job is to offer hospitality and to care for my customers hearts.”

  • Yachiho-San, Geisha in Kyoto, Japan<br /> <br /> Here in their traditional geisha home or okiya, preparing hair and make-up while dressing for the evening is time consuming. The girls must rely on a strong male dresser to help as their kimonos can weigh up to thirty pounds and trail twenty-five feet in length. Sanbonashi is a special design of three lines of unpainted skin that draws attention to the nape of a geisha’s sensual neck, considered to be the most alluring part of a woman’s body.

  • Kikugawa, a Tayu in Kyoto, Japan<br /> <br /> A Japanese Tayu is well respected and considered to be the highest rank of female escort. Although considered more elaborate than a Geisha she must also be well versed in reading, tea ceremony, music and dance. Fewer than five Tayu currently exist in modern day Japan.<br /> <br /> “I chose to become a Tayu as this is my ideal image of a woman. In ancient times Tayu was required to be trained not only in traditional Japanese performing arts, but also in knowledge and accomplishment. I also felt a sense of concern that Tayu culture might disappear, as there are only a few successors. I feel that the preservation and succession of Tayu in the Japanese traditional culture is very important. It brings me great joy that people who meet me become happy. And I feel very rewarded by conveying Japanese culture not only to Japanese people but also to people all over the world.”
