I’ve recently returned from the Congo for the Global Fund for Women to attend the UN convention including local non-profit groups from the Great Lakes region to discuss gender based violence towards the women of Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo.
Gender based violence is rampant across the DRC where a woman is raped every minute. So often these women’s lives are irrevocably changed forever by the simple daily but susceptible activity of collecting water or firewood when alone in the forest. Currently Faces of Hope has partnered with the PAIF organization in the DR Congo to help support the campaign to end ongoing violence in schools. Schoolgirls as young as secondary class are raped almost on a daily basis by their own teachers or coerced into having sex with the threat that they won’t pass their classes unless they succumb. Many of the girls become impregnated and these children are now having unwanted children of their own. It’s a crisis situation.
