Cold

 • Jean Stevens, native Eskimo woman in Bettles, Arctic Circle, Alaska.
I was photographing a story on the coldest places on the planet, Bettles being one of them. It was so cold my eyelashes actually froze. The northern light show was breathtaking but living here is not for the faint of heart. Jean, at 77-years-old, still runs the local post office and tears around on her snowmobile delivering the mail.

 • Bjorn, dogsled driver in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Arctic Norway.
When Bjorn took me out dogsledding there was such an unusual lack of snowfall that we had wheels on our dogsled. He pointed out that Longyearbyen, with less than 2000 people, houses the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, an underground facility that stores millions of crop seeds. This area was chosen for its remoteness and the facility is designed to protect the seeds against natural and human disasters, flood, fire and holocaust. Knowing our last possible food source was stored here gave me the feeling of having really reached the ends of the earth.

 • Jouana and his grandfather Esa, Sami reindeer herders in Lapland, Arctic Circle, Finland.
Sami are the indigenous people of the Scandinavian Arctic that includes the northernmost areas of Finland. Jouana is following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps as he ran out into the snow to feed the reindeer on their farm.

 • Nomad girl wearing fur hat in the Damda region, Kham, Tibet.
From the plains of Mongolia, to the sands of Africa, and the outback of Australia, nomads evoke a sense of freedom, self-reliance and harmony in the often-harsh land around them. None have fascinated me more than the nomads of Tibet, a country that I have been visiting for more than twenty years. I look at the sunburned cheeks of this little girl and wonder at the tenacity it must take to live in such beautiful yet demanding environments and the delicate balance it takes for man, animal and landscape to coexist.

 • Iceland, Jokulsarlon, Glacier lagoon. Skaftafell National Park. Iceland, lying just below the Arctic Circle, is one of the fastest-warming places on the earth. According to the Daily Climate, the 300 some glaciers that cover 10 percent of the island are losing an average of 11 billion tons of ice a year. On this assignment I had just traveled Iceland and Greenland by ship photographing the various incarnations of ice in all its magnificence. Once off the ship I drove across Iceland and one evening ended up in “Iceberg Alley.” I watched as this iceberg flipped over and for the next three and a half hours photographed this ever-changing scene as the sun played out its captivating lightshow.
