A girl for a pig, Dang, Western Nepal 2006.
In some areas of Nepal and India, girls are referred to as paraya dhan, which translates as “someone else’s wealth.”
In the Terai area of Nepal girls can be considered an economic burden and are often sold into bonded labor to ease the financial hardship of their family. Many of these young girls have been saved from being sold as indentured servants through NYF, the Nepal Youth Foundation. Families are given a piglet or a goat to sell at the end of the year instead of their girl children. Which is a rather sad statement about the worth of a girl child in Nepal.
