Nyunt, Guitar Factory in Yangon, Myanmar

Daw Nyunt Nyunt Yee runs a guitar-building shop in Yangon, thanks to a small loan she obtained for supplies. The air is thick and smells of chemicals as the heavy varnish, paint, and glue are heated over a fire in an area that is challenged for ventilation. The room is crowded with about sixteen workers, who can make about 200 guitars a week. “I’m glad that I was able to grow my business but now we need more space. I sell each guitar to a dealer for about 21,147 Myanmar Kyat ($15), so I can make about 563,923 Myanmar Kyat ($400) per week take-home pay. It’s hard work but it helps support my eight-year-old daughter, a student.”
