Their harsh reality is that most who live on the reservations now live below the poverty line. Many hogans have no running water or electricity. Jobs in the vicinity are scarce and alcoholism runs rampant. Vehicles have a difficult time accessing the harsh snow covered plains so many families hunker down in cheap hotels in town for the winter. Still, the Navaho tribes try to cling to some semblance of their culture and instill a sense of identity into their children.
